Making the most of your Pumpkin

The horrifying truth about Pumpkins

Sustainability charity Hubbub estimates that a scary 22 million pumpkins go to waste each year!

The real shame here is that pumpkins are really tasty, and every part of them is edible except for the stalk. Just like their cousins, the butternut squash, there are lots of delicious recipes you can enjoy with them. Have a look at some of our favourites below.

Pumpkins are also great to put into household compost, see our advice on composting below.

Composting advice

  1. We recommend removing the seeds before composting, these can be roasted or saved for planeting next spring.
  2. Remove any wax residue, paint or decorations from your pumpkin and cut into pieces. Smaller pieces make it easier to compost.
  3. Add to the compost heap and wait patiently!

How to save your seeds

  1. Remove the pumpkin seeds from the pulp and wash these thoroughly under the tap. Once clean, pat dry with a tea towel.
  2. Put in a dry, well ventilated place for 1-2 weeks untill dried out. Then transfer to an old envelope for storage and keep somewhere cool and dry until ready for planting next spring.
  3. Plant the seeds out from the end of May or early June, sow a metre apart in holes 2-3cm deep and water well.
