Over 8 Million Hot Cross Buns Sold

Traditional Easter treat, hot cross buns are doing a roaring trade at Morrisons who has seen a year on year increase of 15% in sales of hot cross buns across the country, equating over 8 million buns being sold during the run up to Easter.

Morrisons in-store bakers, make a selection of cakes, pastries and buns in store, so customers can indulge in the sweet, spicy Easter scents whilst doing their weekly shop.  Morrisons in-store Cakeshops have fresh cream filled hot cross buns providing customers with a tasty twist on this traditional Easter treat.

This Easter, Morrisons has also launched a brand new, limited edition Hot Cross Ale (4.5%) so customers can enjoy the fruit bun taste in an alcoholic tipple. The 500ml bottle retails at £1.25 and is the perfect accompaniment to your Easter meal!

The sales figures show that people in the South of England are the biggest fans of Morrisons hot cross buns - nearly a third (28%) of all buns sold this Easter have been sold in this region. Yet, the Scots don’t seem to enjoy the fruity, spicy buns – only 3% of all Morrisons hot cross buns have been sold here.

Of all buns sold this year, a fifth (12%) have been of the healthy variety (Morrisons Eat Smart Hot Cross Buns) whilst Morrisons The Best Hot Cross Buns luxury range accounts for 11% of all sales – as a nation, we want to be healthy yet we’re willing to pay more for a premium product. We’re a nation of traditionalists though – the Morrisons Apple and Cinnamon Hot Cross Buns account for only 5% of Morrisons hot cross buns sales.

Morrisons bakery specialist, Martin Clayton said: “It’s not just about chocolate Easter eggs this Easter – hot cross buns are a true Easter heritage food that is definitely seeing a revival this year. Our in store bakers are working hard all day to ensure our customers are taking home the freshest hot cross buns for their families to enjoy this Easter.”
