For the second year running, Morrisons has secured the most highly sought award in retail, ‘The Retailer of the Year’ at the Oracle Retail Week Awards 2009 – an accolade that only Morrisons has achieved.
The UK’s fourth largest food retailer received the award having continued to out-perform its competitors, despite the difficult economic climate. The fourth major industry award in a row follows; Supermarket of the Year at the Retail Industry Awards, Grocer of the Year at the Grocer Gold Awards and of course Retailer of the Year at last years Retail Week Awards.
The retailer was selected to receive the ultimate industry accolade, by a panel comprising some of the most senior figures in the UK retail sector, such as Debenhams chief executive Rob Templeman, HMV chief executive Simon Fox, and Terry Duddy, chief executive of Home Retail Group, which owns Argos and Homebase.
Morrisons Chief Executive, Marc Bolland said: “This is another award which symbolises the hard work and passion that has established Morrisons as the 'Fresh Food Specialist for Everyone.
“It is our continued reputation for outstanding fresh, value and service that has attracted an additional 500,000 customers over the last year, and earned us this welcome award.
“I am receiving this on behalf of all retailers who are working hard to weather tough times, in the knowledge that UK innovations in retailing will once again bring a renaissance to the industry.”
Speaking about the award, Tim Danaher, Editor at Retail Week commented: "When we presented this award to Morrisons just twelve short months ago, no-one could have predicted the extent to which the market would change in the year to come. To be once again handing this award to chief executive Marc Bolland is testament to the way that Morrisons has adapted during this time to not only meet market challenges head on, but to continue to grow the business by attracting new customers and gaining market share. Morrisons has combined its reputation for excellent fresh produce and great value with the best in modern retail and marketing practice.”
Patrick Bohannon, Vice President, EMEA, Oracle Retail added: “We congratulate Morrisons on being named Oracle Retailer of the Year. Morrisons has strongly differentiated approach to food retailing through its in-house management of almost every aspect of its commercial business, including its people, sourcing and supply chain. Combined with its on-going business transformation programme, this successful strategy is helping to drive growth, enhance profitability and improve customer loyalty.”
