Morrisons is rolling out contactless payment to all stores nationwide as it continues to invest in IT that will make shopping trips simpler and quicker. All stores will have contactless payment PED units by summer 2015.

More than £4 million is being spent over three months to upgrade 15,500 payment points across both Morrisons supermarket and convenience store estates.

It is estimated the payment option will save each customer 10 seconds every time they pay for their shopping. Payments of up to £20 can simply be made by tapping a bank card against the reader. The technology is expected to reduce customer queues, especially during peak periods.

The contactless payment method is growing in popularity. One-and-a-half million transactions are made every day, and over 58 million contactless-enabled cards are currently in UK circulation. This figure is predicted to rise sharply in the coming years.

Martyn Fletcher, Group Retail Director at Morrisons said: “From Summer 2015 all of our payment points across the country will have been upgraded to accept contactless payments. It will make shopping faster and easier for our shoppers. This is another improvement in technology at Morrisons that will improve our customers’ shopping trip.”

Barclaycard Chief Operating Officer for Digital Consumer Payments, Tami Hargreaves, who is supplying the technology to Morrisons said: "The appetite to pay contactlessly has increased sharply over the past year as consumers increasingly value the speed and ease of 'touch and go' payments. By responding to this demand, Morrisons becomes one of an increasing number of UK major retailers to introduce contactless to all of its stores, and the roll-out is timed perfectly to coincide with the contactless limit increasing to £30 later this year."
