In a battle of David and Goliath proportions, Morrison’s ‘The Best’ Champagne has been named as the top tasting supermarket champagne by Which? Magazine in their annual independent taste test.  In a classic underdog story, supermarket Morrisons ‘The Best’ Champagne beat the big boys of the bubbly world Veuve-Cliquot and Moet & Chandon.

The blind taste test compared a selection of supermarket own brand non-vintage brut Champagnes along with three leading Champagne brands. Five renowned Champagne experts were then asked to taste each of the brands in a different order and rate each looking specifically at whether it tasted ‘clean and fresh with a good balance of flavours’. The better Champagnes were judged to have a richness and complexity to their flavour. Morrisons came out top of the supermarket tipples with a favourability rating of 82%, compared to Veuve-Clicquot which only scored 74%, in 6th place out of ten.

Arabella Woodrow, Master of Wine for Morrisons has credited the retailer’s fantastic win based on:
“Morrisons’ ability to select a quality champagne, which produces a crisp and fresh taste that rivals major label Champagnes, but without the hefty price tag.”

This month the retailer has launched its Morrisons branded wine range, using specialist knowledge and techniques to create some fine wines but at a more affordable price. Arabella added: “This brilliant accolade confirms the quality and value of our wines, which Morrisons prides itself on.”

Morrison’s ‘The Best’ Champagne is available in all 437 stores nationwide from Friday 26th November and retails at £19.49*.
