As spring arrives, Morrisons Supermarket is giving thousands of people throughout Britain the opportunity to help improve the environment by funding the green volunteering campaign CSV Action Earth. Morrisons are providing 900 voluntary groups with grants to help kick start community environmental projects in their local area.

This is the fourth year that Morrisons has supported the national environmental volunteering campaign run by CSV, the UK’s leading volunteering and training charity. Last year 18,500 people took part in CSV Action Earth projects improving land the size of 80 football pitches and planting over 45,000 bulbs, flowers and seeds.  Over 1,500 tonnes of cans and paper was recycled saving 25,500 trees or the energy to power 225 million hours of television – which is enough for everyone in the UK to watch movie epic Titanic and an episode of EastEnders!

CSV Action Earth supporter and Gardeners’ World presenter Toby Buckland said, “CSV's Environmental Volunteering Campaign is all about working together to improve your local area. Planting trees and shrubs or creating community gardens are just a few of the things to get involved in which have an instant effect and over time, grow in value to both wildlife and the community. But there's more to volunteering than that - it's a way of learning new skills, meeting new people and enjoying yourself. Sign up now to CSV's Action Earth 2010!"

Mark Harrison, Store Operations Director, at Morrisons says: “CSV Action Earth and Morrisons are offering everyone the chance to make a difference in their community.

“We’re looking for volunteers who want to make a positive impact to their local environment, because we’ve seen that when people contribute to change together it can deliver huge benefits to the community’s we share.

“Spring is the perfect time to start planting and growing, so get together with some friends, colleagues or your school, visit the Action Earth website and see what you can do.”

Tom Freeland, Director of CSV Environment says: "It is great news for the environment that Morrisons are funding 900 volunteering projects. Last year volunteers across the country had a tremendous impact and showed how each one of us can help tackle environmental projects in our own back yard."
