As a result of Coronavirus many charity shops are being forced to temporarily close their doors
Morrisons is to take on staff from Marie Curie and CLIC Sargent charity shops whose doors may need to close because of the Coronavirus.
Morrisons will take on up to 500 colleagues to help the elderly and vulnerable in stores across Great Britain.
They will be working alongside Morrisons’ army of community champions who currently work with local charities and community groups.
Their role will focus on:
- Helping the elderly and vulnerable with their shopping trip so they get what they need
- Taking items to food banks and other charities, who are desperately in need of supplies
- Replenishing items that are needed by the community
- Assisting the elderly and vulnerable at the checkouts and helping them with their bags
Supermarkets have seen unprecedented demand and this move will help the most vulnerable in the communities that Morrisons serves.
Morrisons works closely with CLIC Sargent and Marie Curie who between them have around 500 colleagues working in high street charity shops.
These highly valued colleagues would continue to work the same hours, receive the same pay and conditions. They will return to Marie Curie and CLIC Sargent charity shops when their doors reopen.
Morrisons would welcome interest from other charity shop workers who might be looking for temporary employment in the local community.
David Potts, Chief Executive of Morrisons, said:
“We know that this is a very challenging time for charities and we will do our bit to help. These very highly valued colleagues will play a key role in helping Morrisons support those most vulnerable in the communities we serve. ”
Matthew Reed, Chief Executive of Marie Curie, said:
“Marie Curie is doing everything it possibly can to ensure that every day and night Marie Curie nurses and doctors continue to care for people at the end of the lives. As we face into this national emergency, communities, business and charities need to work together more than ever. To see such swift and compassionate action from Morrisons to not only support our staff, but pool our resources to support the wider community, is truly overwhelming as we work together as part of the COVID19 national response.”
Rachel Kirby-Ryder, Chief Executive of CLIC Sargent:
“We’re overwhelmed by the generosity of Morrisons - this is a really scary time for charities financially and we need all the help we can get to make sure that our vital services for children and young people with cancer survive this crisis. Their kind offer of taking on CLIC Sargent staff will make a huge difference to our charity shop workers, if shops need to close temporarily due to the coronavirus outbreak. We’re prouder than ever to call Morrisons our charity partners and we’re proud to join together with their colleagues to help vulnerable members of the community at this time.”
