Sales of fresh British strawberries at Morrisons are up 50% compared to this time last year and are showing no signs of slowing down, with experts predicting a further rise of 10% by the end of June, peak Wimbledon season.

Mirroring the growing success of the retailer, the Strawberry is definitely odds on to becoming a favourite in households across Britain this summer. Morrisons are one of the few retailers to stock 100% British strawberries from May until September each year (British Strawberry season). Defying the recession, the great British Strawberry is the perfect fruit to accompany chocolate, cream or a glass of bubbly.

Glen Cooper, Strawberry Buyer for Morrisons comments, “Our customers just can’t get enough of this summer fruit. Sales of Strawberries go through the roof in the weeks leading up to Wimbledon, so we will be stocking up to meet the demand.”

The popularity of serving strawberries with cream is possibly as old as Wimbledon itself. King George V started the tradition, and thanks to the trendsetting monarch, the club now sells 59,400lbs of Strawberries over the fortnight, topped off with 77,000 gallons of cream.

For those enjoying the games from home this year, Morrisons has fresh British Strawberries on sale at just £1.80 – Better than half price. Offer until 28th June.
