Morrisons has pledged to donate proceeds from the new carrier bag charge to charities making a difference in Scotland, a windfall that could total more than £700,000.

The change requires all retailers to charge customers five pence for every single-use carrier bag they use for their shopping. Morrisons has publicly backed the charge, arguing that it is likely to lead to a reduction in carrier bag use in Scotland.

Morrisons Scottish Managing Director David Gardner said: “Morrisons fully supports the introduction of the carrier bag charge in Scotland. We’ve seen it work well in Wales, where carrier bag use has fallen by 80%, and we’re sure it will be effective here as well.

“What’s also good about this charge is that the money raised will go to good causes. We estimate the net proceeds of the charge could be over £700,000 which will be donating to charities making a difference in communities in Scotland.

“However, we’re aware this is a big change for customers. That’s why we’ve worked hard to ensure customers are aware of this charge. We’ve put up posters in store and we’ve advised customers directly to make sure everyone is aware of the charge.”
